AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow has its own mobile telephony network

17.04.2018

It operates in the same ways as commercial networks. It is fully functional and has a licensed frequency provided by the Office of Electronic Communications. The first mobile student network in Poland was created by the students of the Telecommunications Department of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow together with Nokia.

The 4G / LTE network is a scientific-demonstrative model and consists of servers located outside and inside the base station buildings belonging to the Department of Telecommunications and the area adjacent to them. It has received recently a license for the radio frequency.
Krzysztof Persona, director of Nokia’s Research and Development Center in Krakow, emphasizes that researchers and students received ” a complete solution that is as close as possible to the actual cellular network”. It allows to conduct experiments and scientific research on the latest solutions in mobile radio technologies (for example Mobile Edge Computing) as well as Internet of Things applications.
