The team working under the direction of Prof. Jacek Jemielity from the Center of New Technologies of the University of Warsaw and Dr Joanna Kowalska from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw, both the laureates of the Foundation for Polish Science programs developed a new modification of the structure of the end of the 5’ mRNA molecule, so-called “cap” – informs the Warsaw university.

According to the researchers, this discovery may be used in the development of a drug for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) or other genetic disorders.
The new modifications developed by the researchers show surprising biological properties, attractive for potential clinical applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

The team of Prof. Jacek Jemielity was nominated for this year’s European Inventor Prize, awarded by the European Patent Office. Currently, the selection process in the Popular Prize category is underway. Its winners are selected in an online poll in which everybody can take part.
