Ecohydrologists from Lodz awarded for innovative solution

23.02.2018

Elimination of toxic cyanobacterial blooms, improvement of water quality in the part of the Bzura river basin and reservoirs in Arturówek near Łódź are practical effects of the application of innovative solutions developed by ecohydrologists from the Department of Applied Ecology of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection of the University of Lodz.

For this project, they received the prestigious “The Best LIFE projects” prize for the best projects completed in 2016-2017. Now they are applying for an even more significant distinction – “Best of the best award”.

The solution elaborated by the Lodz researchers combines the system of hydrotechnical installations and ecological biotechnologies. It allows, for example, to reduce by 80-90 percent the level of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds.

The project was implemented by Dr Tomasz Jurczak; coordinated by Prof. Maciej Zalewski, both from the Department of Applied Ecology, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz. (Kp)
