Fokker D.VII aircraft recreated at the Poznan University of Technology

02.01.2019

Aviation enthusiasts from the Poznań University of Technology reconstructed three Fokker D.VII planes. Flying replicas of aircraft captured by Wielkopolska insurgents in December 1918 at the Ławica airport in Poznań were one of the attractions of the picnic on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Greater Poland Uprising.

In December 1918, Polish insurgents captured 300 German machines in Poznań, which later became the beginning of the interwar Polish aviation and took part in the Polish-Bolshevik war.

Aircraft replicas weigh about 400 kg (the original weighed 540 kg). They differ in the covering materials – the originals were made of impregnated flax, a replica is made of polyethylene material. Airplanes were equipped with electronics, avionics and engines based on Volkswagen elements, and also machine-gun mimics. The propellers have been ordered from a specialist manufactory.

The machines form the Greater Poland Squadron of Freedom. It is a project supported by the Poznan University of Technology, the voivodship self-government, and the Polish Motosport Association.
