Geological Polar Expedition of AGH University of Science and Technology

18.07.2018

The Geological Polar Expedition of the AGH University of Science and Technology (AGH) from Krakow will conduct geological research of the Arctic, staying on Spitsbergen until August 24, 2018.

The expedition was organized under the direction of Dr Eng Maciej Manecki and Dr. Eng. Jarosław Majka from the Department of Mineralogy, Petrography and Geochemistry of the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Protection of the AGH. The researchers will focus on isotopic dating and on petrological, geochemical and structural studies of rocks, which constitute the oldest crystal substrate of the Svalbard archipelago.

This research will allow a gradual reconstruction of the geological history and tectonic evolution of the entire Arctic for 1.5 billion years.
Research conducted this year in the Arctic is partially financed under the “Opus” project of the National Science Center and two “Arctic Field Grant” projects funded by the Research Council of Norway.
