IT system will check if the prosthesis is safe for the patient

22.02.2018

A team of young scientists from the Lodz University of Technology and the Medical University of Lodz is working on the apparatus and algorithm for analyzing the effects of the use of various types of endoprosthetic prostheses (stent grafts) on patients.

– The doctors – even before the procedure – will check what type of prosthesis in which configuration will be most useful for the patient due to its condition and the risk of complications – explained Dr. Eng. Andrzej Polańczyk from the Faculty of Process Engineering and Environmental Protection at the Lodz University of Technology

The evaluation of the suitability of prostheses is carried out in several stages. First, on the basis of radiological examinations, the patient’s aorta models are produced in 3D printers. Different types of dentures are introduced to them; by simulating blood flow, the functioning is monitored, the safety level and the potential risks are assessed.
The system is currently undergoing a patent procedure. In addition to Dr. Eng. Andrzej Polańczyk, MSc. Michał Krempski-Smejda, MD Michał Podgórski, Dr. Eng. Maciej Polańczyk work on the prosthesis. The project is financed by the National Center for Research and Development. (Kp)
