Krakow researchers discovering the secrets of neurodegenerative diseases

11.03.2019

The international team of scientists from the Małopolska Center of Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, deciphered the atomic structure of one of the key cellular “bodyguards” – the Elp3 protein.

This molecule is responsible for the correct production of all other cellular proteins, thus counteracting neurodegenerative diseases. The scientists wrote an article about the results of the research in “Nature Communications”.

Their work is devoted to researching three-dimensional structures of the Elp3 protein found in various organisms. The authors explain that its shape and role remains identical even in the case of very distantly related organisms, and shed light on the mechanisms responsible for their function. Understanding the structure of the Elp3 protein will allow scientists to answer the question of how exactly it works, how they affect the mutation and whether its activity can be blocked.
