Krakow’s scientists conduct innovative research in the field of regenerative medicine

Scientists at the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University and the Krakow John Paul II Specialist Hospital are looking for a way to use a new type of stem cells to treat patients with cardiovascular disease.

The problem concerns hundreds of thousands of Polish patients for whom there is basically no good method of therapy. Heart failure is associated with a death risk of 50 percent in 5 years and, despite the continuous implementation of new drugs, there is only insignificant improvement of these indicators and the quality of life.

Regenerative medicine is a chance for the patients after myocardial infarction to regain lost tissue and to protect those with chronic lower limb ischemia from amputation – said Prof. med. Piotr Musiałek from the Clinical Department of Heart and Vessel Diseases at the Krakow Specialist Hospital, who provides clinical trials assessing the effectiveness of the new therapy.
