PhD student at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław to rejuvenate cells

16.07.2018

Katarzyna Kornicka, PhD student at the Faculty of Biology and Animal Production at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław, is implementing the project “Mitochondrial transfer as an innovative method of restoring stem cells to stem cells isolated from adipose tissue suffering from metabolic syndrome (EMS)”.

The research of a Wrocław PhD student is a consequence of an earlier project, in which the researchers tried to rejuvenate stem cells of horses using resveratrol and 5-azacytidine. – In my project I want to rejuvenate the same cells, only by another method, through artificial transfer of mitochondria, which I isolate from “healthy cells” – explains Katarzyna Kornicka. She adds that in the future there is a chance to use this method in human medicine, especially in transplantology.

For her project, the scientist obtained a grant – almost 140,000 PLN. The money is received from the Prelude 14 program of the National Science Center.
