Polish scientists printed 3D the world’s first bionic pancreas

Researchers from the Foundation for Research and Development of Science (FBiRN) in Warsaw printed 3D the world’s first bionic pancreas with blood vessels.

In October 2015, on the initiative of FBiRN, the BIONIC consortium was formed. It includes the Foundation for Research and Development of Science together with the team of DM Michał Wszoła, Institute of Experimental Biology Polish Academy of Sciences together with a team of Prof. Agnieszka Dobrzyń, Faculty of Materials Science at the Warsaw University of Technology under the supervision of Prof. W. Święszkowski, Center for Biostructure of the Warsaw Medical University under the direction of Prof. Artur Kaminski, the Infant Jesus Clinical Hospital in Warsaw and the MediSpace company.

The consortium received funding from the National Center for Research and Development as part of the STRATEGMED III program and thanks to this support, in 2017 intensive work on the bionic pancreas started, which was successful.
