Prof. Maria Lewicka to hold lecture Recovering memory. The role of memory in the identity of the place

23.11.2018

University of Szczecin and the City of Szczecin invite participants to the lecture of Prof. Maria Lewicka “Recovering the memory. The role of memory in the identity of the place.” The conference takes place within the program Explosions of Knowledge. The idea is to present the most interesting issues from the world of science to the general public.

During the lecture, the professor will analyse whether and to what extent the consciousness of the towns’ past is present in the memory of contemporary inhabitants of the cities of Central and Eastern Europe; how strong ethnocentrism is in the perception of the past of own towns and what psychological factors are developing and hindering the inclusion of foreign identities in their own national and / or local identity.

Special emphasis will be placed on the role of two types of national identity – attachment to the country (patriotism) and glorification of one’s own country (nationalism). The lecture will take place on November 26 in the hall of the mathematics and physical faculty.
