Prof. Rogatko to hold a lecture at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University about the first photo of the black hole

16.04.2019

Professor Marek Rogatko from the Department of Astrophysics and Theory of Gravity of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin invites all interested students to an open lecture entitled “Darkness, I see darkness – the first photo of a black hole”. The lecture will take place on April 16 at. 17:00 in the Hall of the Institute of Physics UMCS.

For the first time in the history of high-energy astrophysics, we managed to take a photo of a black hole located in the center of the M87 galaxy, 55 million light-years distant from us. The black hole itself has a mass of about 6.5 billion solar masses. Photographs and data needed for them were provided by researchers from the Horizon Telescope of Event (EHT), belonging to the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

The lecture will present issues related to the scenes and the possible consequences of taking this unique photography, which focused the attention of all global media.
