Professor Jacek Popiel becomes the new rector of the Jagiellonian University

The current Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Financial Policy Prof. Jacek Popiel will become the new rector of the Jagiellonian University (UJ). On May 12, 193 representatives of the electoral collegium supported his candidacy. Due to the pandemic, the voting took place electronically. He was the only candidate in the elections for the 2020-2024 term.

The election of the 306th rector of the Jagiellonian University was organized by the electoral collegium consisting of 227 people representing all university community. The term of office of the new Rector of the Jagiellonian University will begin on 1 September.

-This is a great honor, and also a great duty, while we are in a very special time of the pandemics. At the moment, it is the most important task to help all employees, students and doctoral students to conduct their scientific research and organize the academic life. This will be one of my first duties.

Jacek Popiel is a professor of humanities in the field of literature and theater studies. He has been working at the Jagiellonian University since 1977. He was the director of the Institute of Polish Studies and then the dean of the Faculty of Polish Studies. From 2012 he has been the Vice-Rector for HR and financial policy.
