04.06.2020

Dr Sylwia Zielińska from the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology of the Medical University in Wroclaw has obtained a grant under the SONATA program of the National Science Center. The researcher will look for plant substances to fight pathogenic bacteria and fungi.

The aim of the project “Elicitors of biotic and abiotic stress as modulators of the isoquinoline alkaloid profile towards specific antimicrobial properties of medicinal plants of the poppy family” is to learn the physiological and molecular mechanisms controlling the production of isoquinoline alkaloids naturally occurring in plants.

Isoquinoline alkaloids are substances found in popular celandine Chelidonium majus, well documented herb in experimental and clinical studies, known for its antimicrobial, antiviral, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
