Researcher of the University of Silesia detected dangerous compounds in solid fuel for barbecue

29.05.2019

Zbigniew Jelonek, PhD student at the University of Silesia has examined the pollution of the solid fuel for the grill available on the Polish market. He also compared the results with the organic content declared by producers in products.

The scientist decided to determine the amount and type of contaminants present in charcoal and briquettes from charcoal, as well as to compare the results of organic carbon content declared by producers. Jelonek has also developed standards for quick identification of undesirable additives in order to optimize the production process of these fuels and adapt it to the applicable standards.

To date, he has found fragments of plastics and metals, fragments of glass and even amber in samples. These types of substances are dangerous, due to muta- and carcinogenic compounds, which arise as a result of combustion and can contaminate grilled food and get into the human body.
