Researchers from Gdańsk and Wrocław looking for new uses of cold plasma

22.02.2019

Scientists from the Wrocław University of Technology and the University of Gdańsk are conducting research on the use of cold atmospheric plasma to inactivate bacteria responsible for diseases of cultivated and ornamental plants. Their work can revolutionize the agro-technical industry.

The aim of the joint project is to develop a fast, effective and cheap method of eradication of bacterial pathogens responsible for diseases of cultivated and ornamental plants. The experiments are carried out using potatoes, chicory and hyacinths as model plants.

By “treating” plants, scientists use a so-called “tripod” mounted on a tripod. a plasma pen that generates a cone of cold atmospheric plasma, several centimeters long and only a few millimeters thick. This allows precise destruction of bacteria in the infected part of the plant. In the near future, scientists plan to continue research on the possibility of using cold atmospheric plasmas in medicine.
