Researchers from Silesian universities developed a device to help in the detection of cancer

02.08.2019

Scientists of the University of Silesia, the University of Physical Education and the Medical University of Silesia have developed a special device for the diagnosis of upper airway squamous cell tumor and pulmonary hypertension based on a breath test.

There are even several hundred volatile compounds in the human breath sample. Based on their analysis, doctors can identify tumor markers signaling whether cancer cells are developing in the human body.

The device developed by Silesian scientists consists of a short tube in which porous carbon is placed, on which markers are absorbed. Then, the coal itself is placed in the analyzer, where further tests are performed to differentiate the compounds. The device has been patented as an industrial design in the European Union.
