Researchers from Wroclaw, Gdansk and Krakow investigating the O’nyong-nyong virus

02.01.2019

Scientists led by Dr Eng. Marcin Sieńczyk from the Wrocław University of Technology will investigate a dangerous virus. National Science Center has allocated over PLN 2 million for the project “O’nyong-nyong virus CP protease: substrate profiling, design and synthesis of inhibitors and molecular probes with their biochemical analysis”.

– This virus is practically unexplored. We derive current knowledge by analogy to other viruses belonging to the same family. We deal with this topic because there is a real epidemic threat, perhaps also in Europe, and at the moment we do not have any medicine or vaccine.
The aim of the project is designing compounds that inhibit the virus’s ability to multiply and reduce its infectious potential. The research team also includes: biochemist – Prof. Adam Lesner from the University of Gdańsk and a virologist – Prof. Krzysztof Pyrć from the Jagiellonian University.
