Risk of accidents increases after sunset

18.02.2019

The risk of an accident for pedestrians after dusk out of town is 12 times higher than during the day – say the analyzes of the Motor Transport Institute (ITS).

The Institute has analyzed road accidents involving pedestrians out of town, which occurred during the day and after dark, where the only source of light were car headlights.

Analysis of the results indicates that during the day (within one hour before sunset, between 16:00 and 17:30), up to 13% accidents with pedestrians happened. After the same time period, but after dusk, this indicator grew from 87 to 100 percent. It means that after dusk in the researched hours and in similar traffic conditions 12 times more accidents with pedestrians occurred than during the day.
