Scientists of the University of Silesia fight Alzheimer’s disease

13.06.2019

Chemists from the University of Silesia, have developed two new derivatives of carbamates, which can be used in medicines to alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

The currently used drugs use enzymes responsible for the degradation of acetylcholine. As a result of the drug’s action, this distribution is blocked, which increases the level of the neurotransmitter in the patient’s brain, which in turn compensates for the decrease in its concentration resulting from the death of cholinergic neurons. The substances that can block this decomposition include organic chemicals – carbamates.

Researchers from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia received new derivatives of carbamates. These compounds will be tested as substances alleviating the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease by affecting the enzymes responsible for regulating the degradation of acetylcholine in both the early and advanced stages of the disease.
