Silesian scientists creating filters from nanofibers

08.04.2020

The Silesian University of Technology is cooperating with the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals of the Łukasiewicz Research Network to create filters made of nanofibers – a material that resembles silk in appearance and touch. The material can be modified in a very wide range during the processes.

Scientists want the filter to be made relatively cheap (like a surgical mask), but just as effective as N95 masks (giving about 95% protection). Creating such a filter will allow to hide it in the pockets of cotton masks sewn by volunteers. Thanks to this, a simple mask will create specialized protection, and thanks to replaceable filters, the masks can serve longer.

Producing filters will be a great support in the combat against the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus. New technologies will support not only the scientists, but also people involved in sewing protective masks as part of social campaigns.
