Solution of doctoral students of Wrocław University of Science and Technology awarded in the PGNiG competition

17.01.2020

Andrzej Nowak and Cezary Czajkowski, PhD students of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology are working on a heat exchanger that will allow energy to be recovered in the process of regasification of liquid natural gas. Their project won the second prize in the fifth Polish Oil and Gas Mining competition “Young Innovative for PGNiG”.

Before natural gas reaches the household, it is transported by pipeline from an underground deposit and liquefied. In this form (and at a very low temperature) it is stored. In order to use it, the gas undergoes the regasification process, i.e. heating in heat exchangers and again it istransformed into a gas phase.

Regasification means energy losses. To prevent this, PhD students designed a heat exchanger that allows the use of thermal energy, its accumulation or conversion into electricity. In a home case, cooled gas could be used in air conditioning or for freezing.
