Ferrari Press Agency Ref 10088 Hand 1 05/02/2019 See Ferrari pictures Picture must credit: Prensilia; Scuolo Superiore Sant'Anna; DeTOP The first patient to get nerve implants in a stump after amputation to control a specially made prosthetic hand has been revealed.In a pioneering surgery, a Swedish woman had titanium implants were placed in two forearm from which electrodes to nerves and muscle were extended to extract signals to control a robotic hand.The implant also allowed her to have tactile sensations. The team behind the pioneering operation say this is the first clinically viable, dexterous and sentient prosthetic hand usable in real life. The breakthrough is part of an EU funded project into helping give brain control to prosthetics, called DeTOP.The new implant technology was developed in Sweden by a team lead by Dr. Max Ortiz Catalan at medical equipment company Integrum and Gothenburg???s Chalmers University of Technology. The woman patient given the implants in the pioneering surgery followed a rehabilitation program to regain the strength in her forearm bones to be able to fully load the prosthetic hand. A spokesman said:???
