Students from the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology’s PWr Aerospace club have won the CanSat Competition United States 2023 international space probe competition, beating 39 student teams from around the world.
The probes constructed by the individual teams were to simulate a space mission under controlled conditions. This year, the probes, which were ejected with a parachute from a height of 750 metres, were tasked with unfolding the heat shield during flight and raising the flagpole to a height of 50 cm after landing.
Teams were also judged in tests conducted before the probes were launched and during the final presentation, in which they show the environmental data collected by the probe. Separate points were also awarded to students for technical documentation and presentation.
The PWr students performed best on all tasks, winning with a score of 92.20 per cent and a lead of almost five percentage points over the second-placed team from Indonesia.
