The heads of nine crocodiles deposited several thousand years ago in two tombs of Egyptian magnates have been discovered by Polish archaeologists from the Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology at the Theban necropolis, adjacent to the temple of Hatshepsut in Egypt.

This is a unique discovery, as until now no tombs in Egypt with crocodile furnishings were known. Mummies of these dangerous reptiles have so far been discovered in temples”, said Dr Patryk Chudzik, who led the archaeological work.

The crocodile heads discovered by the Polish team were not mummified, but wrapped in fabric. They had not undergone any additional treatment.

As Dr Chudzik stressed, the discovery shows that the crocodile remains were part of the tomb furnishings and had magical significance. According to the researcher, they were supposed to help the deceased on their journey in the afterlife.
