Archaeologists from Toruń investigating a medieval port in Puck

09.12.2019

The team of the Center of Underwater Archeology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń is investigating the sunken medieval port in Puck. Scientists’ activities are carried out as part of the “Interreg Central Europe VirtualArch – Visualize to Valorize for better utilization of hidden archaeological heritage in Central Europe” project.

The goal of archaeologists’ activities is to perform a virtual reconstruction of the medieval port at the mouth of the Płutnica River. During the last expedition, the team checked anomalies observed under the bottom of the Puck Bay thanks to the use of parametric bottom sediment profilograph.

The underwater site in Puck was discovered in 1977, when archaeologists found wrecks of medieval boats there. Two years ago, a team of scientists decided to collect research results and supplement them with prospects using modern technologies. On this basis, they created a virtual reconstruction of the port, which in 2020 will be available to be seen in the form of applications for mobile devices.
