01.02.2023

The book ‘The Boat of Ulysses’ by Maciej Świerkocki has been announced the best work in the humanities in Poland in the 8th Prof. Tadeusz Kotarbiński Competition. The winner will receive PLN 50 000 for further scientific research.

Maciej Świerkocki graduated in English philology (1985) and philosophy (graduated in 1988) from the University of Łódź. From 1987, he was an assistant at the Department of Literary Theory of the Institute of Theory of Literature, Theatre and Film at this university. He defended his doctorate in 1995. In October 2011, he resigned from his permanent academic post and supports himself solely by writing.

“In the boat of Ulysses we will sail through Joyce’s masterpiece, and Maciej Świerkocki, who steers it, will convince us that we live in a world of translations, in an age of translation, that is, in an age of seeking understanding, in an age of dialogue, which is so necessary for us today, the art and science of dialogue, is the first skill and duty of a humanist,” said Professor Anna Legeżyńska, a member of the Competition Jury, justifying the selection of the winner.
