Conference “Disco Polo – national music?” to be held in September in Opole

The Polish Song Museum in Opole and the Association of Pop Culture Researchers and Pop Cultural Education “Trickster”are inviting participants on 23 and 24 September to the nationwide interdisciplinary scientific conference “Disco Polo – national music?”

Disco polo is a music genre that in the last three decades has transformed from the embarrassment and the lack of good taste of sidewalk music to a phenomenon of unflagging popularity, filling the largest stadiums in Poland. The genre has become the same cultural phenomenon that provokes researchers to in-depth scientific reflection.

Conference topics include: the genealogy of disco polo and related genres; poetics of works from disco polo music circles; disco polo and other “national” musical genres in Europe; disco polo in the period of economic transformations (first half of the 1990s); the role of the media in the promotion and distribution of disco polo – development of dedicated media and policy towards disco polo, disco polo towards politics.
