Dragonfly and Red Bomber – unmanned airplanes constructed at the Academic Air Club of Wrocław University of Technology – will take off in April in the SAE Aero Design West 2018 competition in California. 75 teams from around the world announced the participation in this competition.

SAE Aero Design tournaments have been organized for 30 years. The task of the participants is to construct unmanned airplanes that meet stringent standards. Machines are designed to lift as much weight as possible while weighing as little as possible.

Constructed by members of the AKL “Red Bomber” will start in the Micro class, in which the ratio of the raised weight to the weight of the aircraft itself is thoroughly calculated. The model weighs only 423 grams, but it can lift up to 1.3 kilograms weight.

The second plane – “Dragonfly” – will start in the Advanced class. It weighs 8 kilograms and it will be able to carry a load of 15 kilos, and then drop it onto the designated target. During the construction, students used laser cutting and 3D printing.
