The most numerous expedition to the Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) Polar Station in Spitsbergen since 1975 has ended. The expedition was primarily focused on research into changes in the fronts of the Kaffiøyra glaciers and their foregrounds. The expedition, which lasted from mid-June to early September 2022, involved UMK scientists and students, a researcher from the Polish Academy of Sciences and scientists from Taiwan.

The aim of the expedition was to continue standard glaciological studies related primarily to monitoring the mass balance of glaciers, which are characterised by some of the longest measurement series on Svalbard. Glacier outflow studies and UAV mapping of river catchments were also carried out as part of hydrological monitoring.

The research was carried out as part of the project ‘Changes in the glaciers of north-western Spitsbergen as an indicator of contemporary transformations taking place in the cryosphere’, funded by the National Centre for Science”.
