Specialists from the Medical University and the University Clinical Hospital (USK) in Wrocław were the first in Poland to perform a heart retransplantation procedure with simultaneous kidney transplantation. The procedure, performed by two teams of surgeons, took several hours.

A repeat heart transplant is extremely rare, and performed together with a kidney transplant in the same patient is an absolutely unique procedure. The 54-year-old woman underwent the operation in May, but only after three months it is possible to speak with certainty of success: the patient’s condition allows her to be discharged home.

“An increasing number of people with heart failure also have kidney problems. This is why there is a need for multi-organ transplants, the number of which is steadily increasing worldwide. In the USA, for example, around 150 such procedures are performed annually. In Poland, they are still the exception”, says Dr Roman Przybylski from the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the USK Heart Institute, who transplanted the patient’s heart.
