International project Virtual Arch in the Bay of Puck completed

27.07.2020

The international project Virtual Arch implemented under the Interreg Central Europe program has been completed. The medieval port in the Bay of Puck was the pilot site for researchers of the Center for Underwater Archeology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

10 partners from Poland, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia and Italy were involved in the project. The main goal was to reconstruct and visualize the inaccessible archaeological heritage – the medieval port situated at the mouth of Płutnica to the Bay of Puck.

The research was carried out in stages, starting with the collection and digitization of scattered archival documentation. Then, hydroacoustic and seismic scans were performed. The scientists made aeronautical and photogrammetric documentation in selected areas.

Analyzing the data allowed to reconstruct the history of the port by dividing it into five different periods. An additional effect was the preparation of an animation showing the hypothetical appearance of the port in the 12th century.
