Developed by students from the Faculty of Materials Science and Physics of the Krakow University of Technology (PK), hydrogel materials that can act as innovative third-generation dressings for the treatment of skin necrosis, were awarded a silver medal at the EUROINVENT – European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation in Iași, Romania.

The solution developed at the Faculty of Materials Science and Physics is dedicated to patients with difficult to heal skin burns, pressure ulcers and ulcer wounds.

Failure to properly care for such wounds can lead to local skin necrosis as well as bacterial infection, which in extreme cases results in limb amputation or even death.

Hydrogel dressings create an appropriate environment for wound healing, and at the same time provide medicinal substances supporting the healing process. The innovation of PK hydrogel systems is their multifunctionality: they create a barrier to microorganisms, do not stick to the wound, absorb wound exudate and provide substances with bactericidal and healing properties.
