According to research conducted by Prof. Kamil Kowalczyk from the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn Over the past 200 years, the level of the Baltic Sea has increased by 23 cm, including as much as 17 cm over the last half-centur,.

The research of Prof. Kowalczyk shows that the speed of change in the level of the Baltic Sea for individual places is different. The chart shows that since 1950 the changes in the level of the southern Baltic Sea (relative to the Earth’s crust) have clearly accelerated and amount to an average of + 1.7 mm / year which in the next 10 years gives +1.7 cm.

The change in sea level is not equal for the whole Earth. Regional changes are mainly caused by periodic changes in waters from large rivers, changes in water resources, which have a particular impact on inland seas and rising temperatures. Temperatures on Earth rise and fall periodically. “We are currently in the growth phase. The aftermath of this is the inflow of waters from melting glaciers to the seas and oceans”, explains Prof. Kowalczyk.
