Miniature laboratory wins the “Innovation is a Woman” competition

22.03.2018

Agnieszka Podwin, PhD student at the Wrocław University of Technology, won the 8th “Innovation is a Woman” competition. The young researcher developed a refined laboratory on the chip, including a gas dispenser to support cell culture and a yeast-powered mini reactor for generating oxygen.

The laboratory on the chip is a miniature device of a size from a few millimeters to a few square centimeters. It is used for various types of biochemical analyzes, e. g. analysis of genetic material and blood, but also for cell culture.

Cell cultures require the use of dispensers that provide them with various types of nutrients and gases. For research on miniature chips, the miniaturized versions of devices should be used, but the models available on the market are expensive. The PhD student developed her own type of dispenser made of semipermeable polymer.
