Polish Academy of Sciences published mini scientific guide about the Białowieża Forest

The Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) has published a mini scientific guide on the Białowieża Forest. When did the Forest appear? Did people make it? Is it a primeval forest? Is tree planting a threat to the Forest? We will find the answer to these and other questions in the PAN publication.

Researchers of the Polish Academy of Sciences are presenting in an accessible and concise way the history, natural values and problems of protecting of this best-preserved natural forest in Europe.

The Białowieża Forest covers an area of approximately 1,500 km2, of which 630 km2 area is located in Poland and 870 km2 in Belarus. The entire Belarusian part is under protection in the form of a national park with many parts under strict protection. In Poland, the entire forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Natura 2000 area.
