The Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Warsaw (CAŚ UW) is embarking on a new cultural heritage conservation project ‘Baraka: Revitalisation of the oldest surviving mosque in Old Dongola’ funded by the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Areas at Risk of Conflict (ALIPH).

The Old Dongola Mosque is the oldest surviving building of its kind in Sudan. The Baraka project aims to restore it according to modern conservation standards and open it to visitors from home and abroad.

An interdisciplinary team of Polish, Sudanese and Japanese specialists led by Dr Artur Obłuski, director of CAŚ UW and head of the archaeological expedition in Old Dongola, in cooperation with the Sudanese National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM), will work on documenting the building, stabilising its structure and making it accessible as a monument.

The team includes specialists from CAŚ UW, the Warsaw University of Technology, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the University of Life Sciences in Poznań.
