Polish scientists compare thirteen techniques of optical tissue cleaning

05.08.2020

Scientists from the Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) compared thirteen optical tissue cleaning techniques. It is an innovative method that allows for medical observations in three dimensions. The article with detailed research results was published in the prestigious “Journal of Immunology”.

Paweł Matryba, PhD student at the Department of Immunology at the Medical University of Warsaw, who collaborates with the Nencki Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, explains what the new method is all about.

-These are chemical treatments that make the tissue transparent while maintaining its original structure, – he says. This opens up completely new observation possibilities. Previously, biologists had to choose: either they made whole-organ observations with low spatial resolution or small slices with very high resolution, – adds Matryba.
