Dr Karolina Mikulska-Rumińska from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (UMK) received the International Rising Talents award. It has been recognized for breakthrough discoveries in the context of ferroptosis – one of the types of cell death, the knowledge of which may contribute to the treatment of cancer.

The International Rising Talents Awards have been presented since 2000 to young scientists at a key stage in their scientific careers and conducting research in response to the most important problems of humanity. The winners are selected from among the scholarship holders of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program.

A researcher at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at the Nicolaus Copernicus University uses innovative computer methods and focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms responsible for cell death in the process of ferroptosis. It is crucial for identifying new solutions that may, as a result, lead to the treatment of neoplastic or neurodegenerative diseases.
