Researcher from the Silesian University of Technology becomes a laureate of the Prime Minister’s Award

Dr Marcelina Jureczko from the Biotechnology Centre and the Department of Environmental Biotechnology at the Faculty of Environmental and Energy Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology has been awarded the Prize of the Prime Minister in the category of outstanding doctoral thesis.

The Awards Team awarded the Silesian university researcher a distinction for her thesis ‘Research into the ecotoxicity of selected cytostatic drugs and the possibility of using fungi to remove them’. The scientist was the first person in the world to prove that fungal biomass can be used ultimately as an effective sorbent for the substances under investigation.

‘My dissertation dealt with the toxicity of selected anticancer drugs present in waters and assessed the suitability of selected fungal species for the removal of these substances from the environment’, says Marcelina Jureczko.
