Researchers of the Jan Długosz University of Humanities and Sciences in Częstochowa will conduct research on the origin of the ancient iron smelting slag in the present-day territory of Poland. They gained over 645 thousand PLN for the project under the Opus program of the National Science Center.

The aim of the project is to identify the chemical composition of iron ore and slag from selected archaeological sites in the largest metallurgical centers from the pre-Roman and Roman period in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, Mazovia and Central Silesia.

The project is part of the long tradition of research on ancient iron metallurgy in Poland, especially in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. In antiquity, it was the largest iron production center in Europe outside the Roman Empire

Scientists want to determine whether the chemical compositions of the ore and slag of iron smelting were various. It could enable to determine the origin of ferrous objects based on the analysis of slag inclusions contained in them.
