Researchers of the University of Life Sciences in Poznań investigating the use of insect faeces in agriculture

09.04.2021

Scientists of the University of Life Sciences in Poznań (UPP) are carrying out research under the project “Development of technology for the production of organic fertilizer (in the form of pellets / granules) based on Hermetia illucens excrements and studying its impact on selected plants”.

Researchers are trying to answer the question whether the natural fertilizer produced by insects can be used in agriculture, horticulture and hobby crops. The first results of the research are very promising, they show that there is a possibility of using the fertilizer in the cultivation of winter barley, perennial ryegrass, lettuce and basil.

– We are currently testing various doses of this fertilizer, methods of application, we will also check how the plants perform under drought stress in the case of using this fertilizer, of course compared to combinations in which the Hermetia illucens manure fertilizer was not used – says Dr Zuzanna Sawinska, University of Life Sciences in Poznań.
