Scientists from the Gdańsk University of Technology creating a diagnostic system for trams

23.08.2021

Researchers from the Gdańsk University of Technology are working on the implementation of a tram diagnostic system that will avoid breakdowns. The project is carried out in cooperation with the company Gdańskie Buses and Trams. It will be the first such extensive system of this type in Poland.

Researchers will observe selected tram performance parameters, including data from sensors monitoring temperature, suspension subsidence or hydraulic pressure in brakes – in order to notice disturbing changes in their values and warn against an impending failure.

-We would like to indicate in advance the moments when the machine should be serviced or repaired. Unforeseen tram stops and immediate refurbishment are always very expensive. They take a long time and happen at the wrong time. It is much cheaper to repair a component before it fails, – says Dr Jacek Czyżewicz from the Institute of Mechanics and Machine Design of the Gdańsk University of Technology.
