Scientists from the Institute of Energy at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding at the Gdańsk University of Technology will construct a bactericidal chamber as part of a project co-financed by the National Science Center. The phenomenon of photothermablation of gold nanoparticles taking place in the chamber will enable the elimination of bacteria and viruses.

The project “Optimization of the shape and distribution of gold nanostructures in a bactericidal chamber using the photothermablation process” will be carried out in a consortium with the Medical University of Gdańsk.

Scientists will determine the degree of conversion of electromagnetic waves into heat on more or less complex shapes of nanoparticles: e.g. nanorods, cubes, stars, triangles of various sizes, for different optical conditions and factors. Based on these tests, the value of the heat source will be determined, which will heat the entire chamber to deactivate selected bacteria or viruses.
