Scientists of the Gdańsk University of Technology developed a portable tester to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus

01.01.2022

Researchers from the Gdańsk University of Technology have developed a portable device for analyzing exhaled air samples for SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, which will ultimately allow users to obtain a result even in a minute, for a symbolic 1PLN and in a way that is less inconvenient for the test person.

The invention, which is being tested by the doctors of the Medical University of Gdańsk, working at the University Center of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia, may be an alternative to routine diagnostic methods. The test, which is easy to perform in various conditions, fits in with the development of tools for the ideal model of SARS-CoV-2 infection testing: it is fast, mass and low-cost.

The method is not as accurate as the tests used today, but it is faster, cheaper and more convenient for the patient than taking a sample from the nasopharynx. Therefore, it will work as a screening method, i.e. one that allows the initial detection of infection resulting in recommendation of a thorough examination.
