Scientists of the Nicolaus Copernicus University receive a grant to fight COVID-19

Employees of the Department of Applied Computer Science and the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy at the Medical Center of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń received a grant from the National Center for Research and Development for the project “Expert system supporting physicians in ventilator control”. They will conduct it in collaboration with the anesthesiology and intensive care unit of the hospital in Grudziądz.

The aim of the project is to create an expert system, based on artificial intelligence algorithms, which, is able to determine the values ​​of the ventilator settings, i.e. pressure, volume, flow and frequency, basing on real-time data about the patient’s condition collected from the ventilator, cardiomonitor and blood gas analyzer, as well as the results of laboratory tests,.

The grant was received under the program “Support of hospitals in the fight against the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and in the treatment of COVID-19”. Scientists have received a budget funding PLN 2.6 million.
