Scientists of the University of Silesia designing games that support rehabilitation

16.09.2020

Scientists of the University of Silesia are designing games supporting rehabilitation, intended for both children and adults. The plot of the games is designed in such a way that patients perform specific movements, exercising selected parts of the body.

Scientists from the team coordinated by Dr Paweł Janik from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering designed rehabilitation games using VR technology for patients who require rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal system or who have post-traumatic problems, as well as suffer from neurological, rheumatological and orthopedic diseases.

The rehabilitated person takes on the role of the main character of the game. He tries to avoid obstacles, collects honeycombs, reaches for apples in the orchard, or moves through spaceship rooms. To achieve the goal, he has to change the position of his arms, legs, and sometimes the whole torso, which is possible thanks to the use of non-invasive motion sensors attached to parts of the patient’s body.
