Spin-off company of the Warsaw University of Technology working on straws from coffee grounds

31.03.2021

Starbucks Polska and EcoBean, a spin-off company of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Warsaw University of Technology is going to market straws made of used coffee grounds.

EcoBean was created to process coffee grounds into briquettes and use it as a new source of green energy.

The new straws will be made entirely of used coffee grounds, and therefore they will be- fully biodegradable. The solution is a response to the requirements of the directive prohibiting the use of many polymers in the production of drinking straws.

Initially, the grounds will be transferred as part of the test by 22 coffee shops in Warsaw.

-To a large extent, we will produce one straw from a double espresso, but most importantly, we will also use leftovers in a different technology. For partners, implementing straws in a closed circuit, it will be a cheaper solution than the current one. It will be an invaluable solution for the planet – says Marcin Koziororowski, CEO of EcoBean.
