Telescopes of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań to ensure the safety of satellites

Five new telescopes of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, placed in the Dark Sky Park, are searching the sky for threats from outer space. The center in Chalin cost PLN 3 million to ensure the safety of Earth’s satellites.

Currently, about 20,000 artificial satellites are flying over our heads, but only a few thousand of them are still operational. The rest is classified as the so-called space junk. You have to observe their flight, mark the trajectory and react while they are dangerous.

– There will be more and more objects in space. The famous Starlinks cyclically launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX mean already several hundred new objects placed in orbit in a short time. It is known that other space operators have similar plans to Elon Musk, so the risk of collision between the satellites will continue to increase – says Dr Krzysztof Kamiński, Astronomical Observatory of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
