Toruń scientist writes on the cosmic journey of water

An international team of astronomers at the University of Leiden (the Netherlands), including Dr Agata Karska from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, prepared a paper on the origin of water in new, potentially habitable worlds.

The article was published in the prestigious journal “Astronomy & Astrophysics”. It shows that most of the water is formed as ice on fine dust particles in the cold interstellar clouds. When a cloud collapses, giving rise to new stars or planets, this water is largely held back by depositing on pebble-sized dust particles. In the disk that rotates around the young star, these pebbles then form larger structures that form new planets.

In addition, scientists have calculated that in most of the new planetary systems there is enough water to fill several thousand oceans.
